HEUNA Promotional Items
We decided to order 200 white window clings with our HEUNA logo on it to distribute at future meetings and events. These will be available at our April meeting. We will also print more informational HEUNA brochures. These items will be great to give to new neighbors and will be available for anyone to take at our meetings.
ANNUAL Potluck Picnic
Save the date: Saturday, June 9, at noon, at the pavilion in Victory Park (Green and Lynn) will be our annual HEUNA potluck picnic. All are welcome. Burgers, hot dogs, and buns will be provided. Please bring a dish to share. We will have live music, and are working on securing a bounce house and city trucks (Touch-a-Truck) for the kids. In case of rain, we will move our activities to the Baha’i Center at Green and Lynn.
Neighborhood Trash Pick-Up DAY
Alice Englebretsen and Janie Frye are organizing a day this spring where we will encourage neighbors to go around their own block to pick up trash and put it in their own garbage bin. At the same time, we encourage neighbors to write down anything that presents itself as a safety hazard or nuisance, such as bad sidewalks, overgrown shrubs/tree limbs, dilapidated properties, etc. Then we will compile everyone’s list and present it to the Urbana City Council. Date TBA!
HEUNA Leadership Opportunity
Holly Rushakoff has been leading the HEUNA meetings for the past year. Since she will begin her master’s degree this summer, she is looking for others willing to conduct and organize our monthly meetings. Responsibilities include:
• Keeping track of the agenda
• Leading the meeting
• Setting the next meeting’s date
• Taking meeting minutes and forwarding them to be posted on our website
• Sharing posted minutes with our Facebook group and Google Group
• Reminding our Facebook group and Google Group of the next meeting about a week or so beforehand
If you’re interested in leading HEUNA in this way, or co-leading with others, please attend a future meeting to learn more.
Garden Plots Available in Victory Park
Community garden plots (both raised beds and in-ground) are now available to rent. If they aren’t used, we could possibly lose them. Victory Park has been a pilot program for garden plots available in neighborhoods; the only other one in Urbana is at Meadowbrook Park. Learn more at www.urbanaparks.org/parks/victory-park.
RealMomDaily.com is organizing “A Mother’s Day Community Give Back” event on Monday, May 9, 3-5 p.m., in Lincoln Square in front of Connections resale store. Kids are invited to decorate bags and laundry baskets that they will fill with donated toiletries and cleaning supplies. These will be given to women and families in need, identified by our local women’s shelter Courage Connection. Snacks and refreshments will be provided by Rafter’s Pizza.
Janie Frye, the gardener at the Baha’i Center, has offered about 30 wintergreen boxwood plants. They aren’t successfully growing in the location she planted them, but in the right space would grow 4×4′ if left untrimmed. Please contact Janie Frye on Facebook if you’re interested in taking any.
Thanks also to Janie for giving us jars of orange marmalade that she canned! 🙂
Join us on Thursday, April 26, at 7-8 p.m., at First Wesleyan Church (408 E. Illinois). Scott Dossett will be our guest speaker, explaining the civilian police review board. We will also share any updates on the above agenda items. As always, other neighborhood-related topics for discussion are welcome.
